Melrose School Children's Summer Reading Program

Importance of Summer Reading

The statewide Rhode Island Summer Reading Program is supported by the RI Office of Library and Information Services with funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the          Pawtucket Red Sox, Citizens Bank and Pepsi. Local support includes RI Children's and Young Adult Librarians.  Special thanks to the Friends of the Jamestown Library.

The Jamestown Philomenian Library is excited to be partnering with the Jamestown Schools this year in order to increase the scope and significance of the Summer Reading Program.

Research has shown that children who read six or more books during the summer   maintain or improve their  reading skills, while children who do not lose ground by September.

How to Participate

1. Register for the Summer Reading Program (SRP) in-person or email your name, address, phone number, school, and entering grade to jamlibkids@gmail.com. Registration begins on June 23rd.

2. Upon registering, you are stating that you will read 6 books over the course of the summer. The titles and authors of these books need to be registered with Miss Lisa by August 8th in order to complete the SRP.

3. Participants who read all 6 books by the August 8th deadline are invited to the “Fizz Boom Read Party” at the Library on Tuesday, August 12th at 7:00 p.m. Make your own ice cream sundae, hang out with your fellow reading friends and win some cool prizes!

4. The fun continues when you go back to Melrose School! Create a bookmark that     incorporates the names of the six books you read, your full name and your grade for the 2014-2015 school year. Turn your bookmark in at JPL or to your homeroom teacher during the first week of school and receive even more prizes for your reading!

Lewis Carroll's immortal classic, Alice in Wonderland, is a wonderful tale of a young girl whose boredom takes her on a journey of imagination. Through Alice's travels, everyday things become extraordinary. The words on the page come alive as she recites The Jabberwocky and learns how to overcome her own fears. Through this story, we hope to encourage children to enjoy using their imagination, triumph over their fears, and find magical things right in their own backyard.

Magic is one of the oldest art forms in history. Most people think of magic as just pulling coins out from the ears or       pulling rabbits out of hats, but in today's society magic has evolved into something much more modern. It can not only amaze and astonish the hardest skeptic, it can create       reactions that can touch and connect with others. Magic is a great ice breaker that breaks social barriers. With Darren's down to earth laid back style of magic and personality, he will show you what a great tool it can be.
