Lawn School Summer Reading Program

Importance of Summer Reading

The statewide Rhode Island Summer Reading Program is supported by the RI Office of Library and Information     Services with funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Pawtucket Red Sox, Citizens Bank and Pepsi. Local support includes RI Children's and Young Adult Librarians. Special thanks to the Friends of the Jamestown Library.

The Jamestown Philomenian Library is excited to be partnering with the Jamestown Schools this year in order to increase the scope and significance of the Summer Reading Program.

Research has shown that children who read six or more books during the summer   maintain or improve their  reading skills, while children who do not lose ground by September.


How to Participate

1. Register for the Summer Reading Program (SRP) in-person or email your name, address, phone number, school, and entering grade to Miss Lisa at jamlibkids@gmail.com. Registration begins on June 23rd.

2. Upon registering, you are stating that you will read 6 books over the course of the summer. The titles and author of these books need to be registered with Miss Lisa by August 6th in order to complete the SRP.

3. Participants who read all 6 books by the August 6th deadline are invited to the “Spark a Reaction” party at the Library on Thursday, August 7th at 5:00 p.m. Eat pizza, watch a  movie and win some cool prizes!

4. The fun continues when you go back to Lawn Avenue school! Create a bookmark that incorporates the names of the six books you read, your name and your grade for the 2014-2015 school year. Turn your bookmark in at the   library or during the first week of school and receive even more prizes for your reading!

Create Your Own Comic Book
                          
Are the margins of your school notebooks full of doodles? Then this workshop is for you! Learn how to design and illustrate a comic book character from the ground up! Eric Fulford will guide you through the process and provide tips and techniques as you create your character, as well as your character's unique back-story!

Pizza and a Movie: The LEGO Movie                                                                                           

An ordinary Lego construction worker, thought to be the prophesied 'Special', is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the Lego universe into eternal stasis. PG, 100 mins.

Henna by Heather                  

Humans have been adorning their bodies with beautiful, natural henna for millennia. From ancient Egyptian mummies to modern day Indian weddings, henna is often used to mark and celebrate rites of passage and times of  transition. We'll discuss where the henna plant grows, how it is prepared for use in decorating the skin, and how  botany and physiology combine to make it possible for the designs to last 1-3 weeks. After learning about the history and science of henna, participants will get to experience this art form first-hand, drawing out their own patterns and having henna applied by professional henna artist Heather Caunt-Nulton of Henna by Heather.

Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem. PG-13, 146 mins.

Make Your Own Video Game Using Scratch

The Rhode Island Computer Museum will present a workshop called "Make Your Own Video Game." This is a great chance to put down your controllers and take time to learn           interactive software titled "Scratch" and create your own "video game" sample. Presented by our learning team, the program will also include an exhibit on "Historic Video Games." The exhibit aims to explain the impact of Early    Video Games and then teach the MIT developed youth program "Scratch." Scratch is a computer program developed to teach software coding and allows you to create your own "video game" sample. The workshop aims to  explain how early video games were made and give students new skills to develop their own games. The presentation is part of ongoing traveling exhibits by the Rhode Island             Computer Museum.

The Hunger Games Basic Survival Course

Calling all tributes! Welcome to the 74th Annual Hunger Games! The time has come to say goodbye to loved ones and journey to the capitol to begin your training.

*Learn to create life-saving shelter anywhere
*Discover how to locate and purify water
*Learn to build a quick fire that can be lit using only one match
*Practice Katniss's famous twitch-up snare
*Learn four edible/medicinal wild plants
*Try your hand at Peeta's camouflage techniques
*Learn archery basics and one or more participants get to shoot a replica of Katniss's bow from the arena

Pizza! Movie! Prizes! For those who complete the Summer Reading Program. Be sure to complete the program so that you can be eligible for cool prizes through the library AND through school!

This program is sponsored by the Jamestown Philomenian Library, the Friends of the Library and Lawn Avenue School. Tweens and teens from other schools are welcome to participate.

4. The fun continues when you go back to Melrose School! Create a bookmark that     incorporates the names of the six books you read, your full name and your grade for the 2014-2015 school year. Turn your bookmark in at JPL or to your homeroom teacher during the first week of school and receive even more prizes for your reading!

Lewis Carroll's immortal classic, Alice in Wonderland, is a wonderful tale of a young girl whose boredom takes her on a journey of imagination. Through Alice's travels, everyday things become extraordinary. The words on the page come alive as she recites The Jabberwocky and learns how to overcome her own fears. Through this story, we hope to encourage children to enjoy using their imagination, triumph over their fears, and find magical things right in their own backyard.

Robots on the Run—Limited to 10 participants.     7+                                                                                                   

The Rhode Island Computer Museum will present a workshop called "Robots on the Run." The workshop aims to explain basic circuits and instructions on how to build a simple robot. You will learn programmable electronics, and instructions for making lights blink, motors run, sounds, and a lot more. We'll take time to learn about interactive software titled "Arduino" and you can create your own sample "Robot."

Learn about Robotics and how robots can be programmed to complete "missions" related to First Lego League's (FLL) Nature's Fury theme.  Participants will have an opportunity to program the robots and learn from experienced team members who have participated in FLL's competitions.

It can not only amaze and astonish the hardest skeptic, it can create       reactions that can touch and connect with others. Magic is a great ice breaker that breaks social barriers. With Darren's down to earth laid back style of magic and personality, he will show you what a great tool it can be.

Dave Marchetti's Animal Experiences program is a fun and incredibly hands on way to meet turtles, snakes,     lizards, some small mammals, and Wally the alligator up close and personal. Dave's program combines learning some interesting facts about his animals with the thrill of actually handling them. Dave's presentation can put you completely at ease with animals you might not normally touch. Join him and his friends for a wonderful hour     program.

Don’t forget that the prizes and fun will continue when you go back to Melrose School so be sure to complete the Summer Reading Program.                           


Summer Reading Program 2014 Introduction


Registration for the Jamestown Summer Reading Program begins on Monday, June 23rd. 


This year, the library is partnering with the Jamestown schools
in order to deliver an even more comprehensive Summer Reading Program.
       Children (C) and Tweens and Teens (T/T) are encouraged to read 6 books over the course of the summer in order to keep up with their reading and to win great prizes both at the library and at school upon their return in the fall. Be sure to participate in the SRP by attending fun programming at the library, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Jamestown Library and the Jamestown schools.
